Search operation at Gul Plaza enters in final stages, authorities set to seal the building

KARACHI: The search operation after the tragic Gul Plaza fire in Karachi is nearing its end, with authorities set to seal the unstable building today.

The district administration confirmed recovery efforts, spanning nine to ten days, have concluded. Precautionary inspections will be conducted one last time before sealing.

Deputy Commissioner South, Javed Nabi Khoso, stated the building is highly unstable and could collapse, urging families of missing persons to contact the administration immediately.

Data of 30 deceased individuals has been sent to the government for financial assistance, with cheques ready for legal heirs. The death toll stands at 73, with 82 people reported as missing. DNA testing has confirmed the identities of 23 victims—16 through analysis. While 55 families have submitted DNA samples, others have been given a deadline for the identification process.

The ground and mezzanine floors have been fully searched, with just a small area pending clearance.

A case of the fire incident has been registered against unidentified individuals. SSP City Arif Aziz revealed an FIR was lodged at Nabi Bakhsh police station. Witness statements, including those of six security guards, are being recorded. If negligence is confirmed, accountability will follow.
