Sindh enforces strict fire safety regulations for private schools

KARACHI: The Sindh government has enforced strict fire safety rules for private schools. The Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions mandates full adherence to fire prevention protocols.

Schools must install fire alarms, smoke detectors, and extinguishers. Emergency exits and staircases must remain unobstructed, with electrical systems regularly inspected. Fire evacuation plans should be visibly displayed on campus.

Schools are required to conduct fire drills, train staff in emergency response, and provide special provisions for students with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. A designated emergency assembly point is also compulsory.

Authorities warn of strict action against violators. This follows a Monday incident where two children were injured in a fire at a home-based school in Malir. The fire started at a facility operating on the ground floor, while a family lived above. Rescue teams evacuated children, sending the injured, aged 2.5 and 5 years, to the hospital.
