WEB DESK: Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar died on Wednesday when his chartered aircraft crashed in flames. Visuals showed smoke rising from the wreckage scattered across an open field near Baramati, where the plane attempted an emergency landing during his travel from Mumbai for a public meeting amid local elections.
The cause of the crash remains uncertain, pending investigations into possible technical or weather-related issues. Locals rushed to assist as flames engulfed the debris, while officials have yet to release detailed statements.
Ajit Pawar was a prominent politician, serving six non-consecutive terms as Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister under various governments, making him the longest-serving in the role. He also held positions including Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly (2022-2023) and represented Baramati in the Lok Sabha in 1991.
