AJK president barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry dies 

MIRPUR: President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry, passed away on Saturday after suffering from a short illness, bringing an end to a decades-long political journey deeply linked with AJK’s governance and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

According to family sources, his funeral prayers will be offered tomorrow at 3pm in Mirpur, his hometown.

Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry was a prominent political figure in the region and previously served as Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir from 1996 to 2001. His tenure came during a pivotal period in AJK politics, where he played a significant role in administrative decision-making and political developments.

Beyond his time as prime minister, he also led the PPP’s Azad Kashmir chapter as its president from 1991 to 2001. During this period, he worked extensively to expand and consolidate the party’s organisational structure throughout the region.

Widely regarded as one of the PPP’s senior leaders in Azad Kashmir, Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry remained influential in political circles for many years, drawing on his legal expertise, experience in public office, and long-standing association with regional and party leadership.
