LHC issues summons to senior officials in Basant-related petitions

LAHORE: On Monday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) addressed petitions challenging the celebration of Basant and summoned the Director General of the Walled City Authority, the Director General of the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA), and the Director of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to appear before the court the next day.

During the proceedings, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Lahore and other relevant officials were present in court. The judge instructed the DC Lahore to collaborate with the FIA to ensure timely and effective action against the circulation of fake news during the Basant season. The court emphasized the importance of responding promptly to any viral fake news and ensuring it is addressed without delay.

The petitioners’ counsel highlighted a recent incident involving kite string in Lahore just two days prior, criticizing the administration for its lack of timely intervention. Responding to this, the court directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to provide a detailed report on kite string-related incidents.

Meanwhile, representatives from the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) informed the court that dangerous locations had been identified and that a control room had been established at LESCO headquarters to handle the situation. Upon inquiry regarding the timeline for addressing issues in high-risk areas, a LESCO official assured the court that repairs would be completed within two days.

The court adjourned further proceedings until Tuesday.
