MQM-P urges immediate inclusion of article 140-A in 28th amendment to strengthen local governments

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Wednesday emphasized the urgent need for the 28th constitutional amendment, specifically including Article 140-A, to empower local governments across Pakistan.

During a press conference in Karachi, MQM-P Convener and Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui called for the immediate introduction of the amendment. He clarified that the party’s demand is not driven by political motives but by a commitment to strengthening democracy nationwide.

Siddiqui highlighted that the primary goal of the amendment should be the effective implementation of Article 140-A, which ensures citizens’ participation in local governance and decision-making processes. He stressed that, amid increasing regional tensions, this constitutional update has become more critical than ever. He also warned that Karachi, as an economic hub, must remain secure and empowered to maintain national stability.

“The Constitution of Pakistan was created to safeguard the rights of the people. The 28th amendment must be introduced immediately to empower citizens at the grassroots level,” Siddiqui stated.

He pointed out that MQM-P currently has no representation in local government across Pakistan and stressed that decision-making authority should be devolved directly to the people. Senior MQM-P leader Dr. Farooq Sattar called for an end to the feudal system and the establishment of full local and urban autonomy through a robust and empowered local government system.

Echoing these sentiments, Mustafa Kamal emphasized that ongoing regional conflicts make this constitutional amendment even more vital to the country’s security and democratic governance.
