Pakistan–Afghan Taliban talks in Urumqi end without breakthrough

URUMQI: Talks between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban, held in Urumqi under China’s mediation, concluded without a major breakthrough, though both sides agreed to continue engagement in the coming weeks.

According to sources, the talk focused on key issues affecting bilateral relations, particularly cross-border security and militancy. The meeting marked an initial step toward reviving dialogue that had remained stalled in recent months.

Officials described the latest round as a preliminary session aimed at reopening communication channels rather than achieving immediate result. As expected, no significant progress was recorded.

Despite the lack of tangible outcomes, both sides expressed willingness to carry forward the dialogue process, with additional rounds of talks likely to be scheduled soon. China reiterated its role as a neutral facilitator committed to promoting regional stability.

Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi confirmed that the objective of the talks is to address cross-border terrorism and restore peace along the frontier.

He also noted that the issue was discussed during the recent visit of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar to Beijing, where he met with his Chinese counterpart.

Pakistan has urged the Afghan side to take concrete and verifiable action against militant groups operating from its territory. The ongoing engagements are being held at a working level, with Pakistan represented by senior officials.

China has been actively encouraging dialogue between the two neighbours amid persistent tensions and recent clashes following a temporary ceasefire.

While no agreement has yet been reached, diplomatic efforts are expected to continue as both sides seek a path toward lasting stability in the region.
