Tensions escalate as US-Israel launch fresh strikes on Iran’s Petrochemical Hub; Iran warns of radiation dangers

WEB DESK: In a series of renewed assaults, US and Israeli forces targeted Iran’s critical petrochemical sector once again, resulting in five fatalities and 170 injuries. The strikes also destroyed Shahkar Sports Stadium, further escalating tensions in the region.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, condemned the repeated attacks on nuclear and industrial sites, warning that if radiation were to spread, it could cause catastrophic damage not only in Tehran but across Gulf nations. “So far, our enemies have bombed the nuclear plant four times,” he stated, highlighting the persistent threats faced by Iran.

Saturday’s strikes hit multiple targets in Iran’s southwestern petrochemical zone, particularly in Mahshahr, with reports indicating several companies were affected. The Fars news agency confirmed explosions in the region, citing the deputy governor of Khuzestan province. Meanwhile, Tasnim News Agency noted that the full extent of the destruction remains uncertain.

Iranian defense forces reported shooting down more than 160 armed drones since the attacks began, including advanced Hermes and Lucas unmanned aircraft. Brigadier General Alireza Elhami, head of Iran’s Joint Air Defense, asserted that Iran’s indigenous weapons and tactics have successfully countered enemy aircraft, including fifth-generation fighters and sophisticated drones, creating significant confusion among adversaries.

Adding to the mounting tensions, a projectile from the US-Israeli operation struck near the Bushehr nuclear power plant on Saturday, killing one security guard. Official reports from IRNA confirmed that the attack caused no damage to the nuclear facilities themselves.

In a dramatic development, Iran claimed to have shot down an American F-15 fighter jet, marking the first time since the conflict’s escalation that an US warplane was downed inside Iranian territory. Reports also indicated Iran destroyed an A-10 attack aircraft in the Gulf, with US sources stating that one crew member was rescued while the other remains unaccounted for.

The conflict, which began over a month ago with targeted strikes killing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has rapidly expanded, igniting retaliatory actions across the Middle East. The global economy has been affected as markets react to the escalation.

US Central Command has yet to comment on the downing of the F-15, but White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Biden has been briefed on the situation. Former President Donald Trump remarked to NBC that the loss of the fighter jet would not impact negotiations with Iran, adding pointedly, “No, it’s war.”
