Veteran politician sardar Zulfiqar Khosa dies at 90 in Lahore

LAHORE: Senior Politician Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khosa has passed away at the age of 90, his family confirmed on Thursday.

Khosa had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Lahore for some time before his death. Hailing from Dera Ghazi Khan, he remained an influential name in Pakistan’s political landscape for decades, primarily associated with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Born on October 20, 1935, he was the son of Sardar Dost Muhammad Khan Khosa. He received his early education from Queen Mary’s College and later attended Aitchison College in Lahore.

Khosa also held the distinction of being the 21st recognized chief of the Khosa tribe, a prominent Baloch tribe with presence across Pakistan.

He entered politics at a young age, becoming a member of the West Pakistan Assembly in 1962 at just 26, making him one of the youngest lawmakers at the time.

Over his long career, he was elected to the Punjab Assembly nine consecutive times without defeat an achievement rarely matched in provincial politics. He also served in multiple key roles, including Education, Finance, Irrigation, Local Government, and Planning & Development.

Ahead of the 2018 general elections, Khosa parted ways with PML-N due to internal disagreements and later joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
