HANGU: Security forces in Hangu District successfully foiled a major terrorist assault involving more than 100 militants, police officials confirmed on Friday.
According to authorities, the attackers—identified as members of Fitna Al-Khawarij (FAK) attempted to infiltrate multiple areas including Zargari, Shinawari, and Naryab after moving in from mountainous regions of neighbouring Orakzai.
The operation involved coordinated action by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Frontier Corps, and the Pakistan Army, which jointly responded to the incursion and prevented militants from surrounding security posts.
Officials said fighting continued for several days, during which heavy losses were inflicted on the attackers. Reports from local residents indicated that militants retreated while attempting to evacuate their casualties.
Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed praised the courage and swift response of security personnel in repelling the coordinated assault.
However, authorities confirmed that six civilians were killed and 13 others injured when mortar shells fired by militants struck residential areas during the clashes.
Security officials said clearance operations in the surrounding regions are continuing to ensure the area is fully secured and to prevent any further infiltration attempts.
