WEB DESK: Donald Trump said the United States agreed to a ceasefire involving Iran partly because of requests from other countries, naming Pakistan as a key influence. He stated that the US would not have preferred the move under normal circumstances, but went along with it “as a favour” to Pakistan.
Speaking to journalists on Air Force One after returning from China, Trump also mentioned his discussions with Xi Jinping, saying they covered a wide range of issues including Taiwan. He noted there was no agreement on Taiwan policy and said he did not commit to anything regarding US defense actions if conflict were to arise.
Trump added that Xi directly questioned him about whether the United States would intervene if China took military action against Taiwan, but he declined to give a clear answer, saying he does not discuss such scenarios publicly.
On arms sales to Taiwan, Trump said the topic was raised during talks in Beijing and that a final decision has not yet been made.
He also claimed that the US achieved what he described as a “total military victory” over Iran, saying American forces had severely weakened Iran’s navy, air force, and leadership structure. When asked about the possibility of renewed conflict, he avoided giving specifics but said he is confident Iran will not obtain nuclear weapons.
