Babar Azam:  Pakistan’s rising talents ahead of West Indies, England series

WEB DESK: Pakistan’s Test captain, Babar Azam, has emphasized that certain principles are non-negotiable as he takes the helm of the long-format team once again. Speaking in an exclusive interview on Straight Drive with Salman Butt, Babar highlighted three key areas that he will prioritize: discipline, fitness, and performance.

“I’ve learned a great deal from my previous stint as captain,” Babar said. “My main focus will be on maintaining discipline, ensuring top fitness levels, and delivering consistent performance. These aspects will be crucial both for me personally and for the team’s future success.”

He also mentioned that while he always supports his teammates, he will stand firm on these core values. “Whenever I get the chance to lead Pakistan, it is a true honor. I’ve reflected on my past leadership experiences, learned from them, and gained more clarity and maturity. With proper planning and a positive outlook, I am confident I can lead effectively this time.”

Reflecting on his earlier leadership tenure, Babar revealed he’s revisited previous decisions to learn and improve. “As captain, you make good calls but also face moments where you think you could have done better. Self-reflection helps you see the bigger picture. I’ve worked on sharpening my mindset and approaching the game with greater clarity and optimism.”

Acknowledging the youthful nature of the current squad, Babar stressed the importance of nurturing talent. “Our team is young, with many performers coming through domestic cricket. My responsibility as captain is to support them, help them stay relaxed, and back them during tough phases. International cricket is demanding, so I focus on easing pressure for the youngsters by engaging with them both on and off the field.”

Babar also highlighted the significance of the recent NCA Red-Ball Camp, calling it vital for the team’s development, especially for Test cricket. “The camp was crucial for us. We identified areas like fitness, fielding, and patience that needed strengthening. Training under tough conditions prepares players for match pressure and helps us improve overall.”

He added that the team management has been working closely with players on handling pressure and adapting to different match scenarios. “We’ve discussed strategies for managing tough situations, countering opposition plans, and staying mentally strong. Coaches and I share our experiences to help players perform better under pressure.”

Looking ahead to upcoming tours in the West Indies and England, Babar shared that preparations have been tailored to the expected conditions. “We’ve trained with the conditions in mind. The West Indies will be challenging, but our preparation is solid. Many of our players have county experience in England, which will give us an edge.”

Regarding his batting style, Babar revealed he always considers what the team needs. “When I go out to bat, I focus on the team’s requirements rather than just my individual performance. Whether it’s quick scoring or a more defensive approach, I adapt to serve the team’s best interests.”

On dealing with external criticism, Babar said players take constructive feedback seriously but try to ignore negativity. “Everyone has opinions, and we can’t please everyone. We listen to helpful advice and try to implement it, but we also ignore the unwarranted negativity.”

For aspiring young cricketers aiming to represent Pakistan, Babar offered a motivational message: “Believe in yourself and stay committed. Success doesn’t come overnight; routines and continuous effort matter. Keep working hard, and improvement will follow.”

Finally, Babar appealed to fans for ongoing support. “Fan expectations are high, and we understand their desire for victories. Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we learn from losses. That’s the essence of cricket. We ask fans to support us, and we will do our best to meet their hopes.”
