WEB DESK: Meta-owned WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature allowing its approximately 3 billion users to reserve a unique username, starting from early June. Although the full rollout is not yet complete, users can start claiming their preferred handle now so it’s ready for use once the feature becomes fully active later this year.

One of the key benefits of this update is enhanced privacy. By using usernames, users can connect with others without sharing their phone numbers. This is particularly advantageous for those who prefer to keep their personal contact details private. Additionally, businesses can utilize usernames to engage with customers without revealing their phone numbers.

Steps to Reserve a Username

To reserve a username, navigate to Settings > Account on WhatsApp, then tap on “Username” within the “Your Account” section. The first time you access this, you’ll see a “Create username” option where you can enter your desired handle.

If your chosen username is already taken, WhatsApp will suggest alternative options. Some usernames are already reserved, often associated with public figures and large organizations. Users with existing handles on Facebook or Instagram can link their accounts and reserve the same username for WhatsApp seamlessly.

Once set, users can modify their username at any time by selecting the “Edit” button in the same menu. There is also an option to delete the username entirely if needed.

Enhanced Privacy with Username Key

WhatsApp is also introducing a new feature called Username Key, giving users greater control over who can contact them. You can set it to allow messages from everyone or restrict messages to only those who know your 4-digit security key.

If someone does not have the key, they will be prompted to enter it the first time they send you a message. Users have the flexibility to keep the key private or generate a new one whenever they wish.

Rollout Timeline

The username feature will be gradually available to all users over the coming weeks. Currently, the system only allows users to reserve usernames; the ability for multiple users to claim the same name will be enabled once the feature is fully live.
