ANKARA: U.S. President Donald Trump has arrived in Ankara to participate in the NATO summit.
Upon his arrival, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan welcomed President Trump at the airport.
During his visit to Turkey, there is a significant possibility of progress regarding the supply of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey. Recently, President Trump indicated that he might facilitate Turkey’s re-entry into the F-35 program.
After meeting with President Erdoğan at the Presidential Palace, President Trump told the media that Erdoğan is a very good friend, and relations between Turkey and the U.S. are strong. He mentioned that discussions will be held about trade with Turkey and that many believe Turkey should be allowed to purchase F-35 fighter aircraft. The U.S. is currently considering the sale of F-35 jets to Turkey.
Trump also expressed his disappointment with NATO, stating that the alliance has caused much frustration. He said that the U.S. did not need to get involved in the Iran war and that billions of dollars have been invested in NATO to ensure Europe’s safety. He added that if the summit were not being held in Turkey—where his friends are strong and influential leaders—he might not have attended.
Turkish President Erdoğan commented that the issue of F-35 jets is not new. Turkey has previously discussed this matter with the U.S. and was promised five jets. Erdoğan also expressed hope that during the NATO summit, a positive and favorable decision regarding the F-35 fighter jets will be made.
Regarding the situation in Gaza, Erdoğan stated that Turkey will work towards restoring peace in the region. He mentioned that NATO is paying attention to these issues and hopes that positive results will emerge from the summit.
When asked about relations between Iran and the U.S., Erdoğan replied that Turkey is making every effort to bring both parties to a common ground and to strengthen global peace. He emphasized that all of Turkey’s friends are working together towards this goal.
