Sindh govt orders probe into multi-million rupee scam at Karachi girls college

KARACHI: The Sindh College Education Department has initiated an investigation into alleged financial misconduct involving millions of rupees related to two development projects at a girls’ college in Murad Memon Goth, Karachi.

Following a review meeting, Secretary of the College Education Department, Nadeem ur Rehman Memon, instructed prompt action against the officials implicated and the two contracting firms associated with the projects.

He also called for the issuance of show-cause notices to the responsible officers and directed a thorough audit of the project documentation. Additionally, the secretary mandated that both companies be blacklisted and their security deposits be confiscated as per legal procedures.

During discussions, it was disclosed that a former executive engineer had reportedly issued advance payments to contractors contrary to established regulations. 

The officials stated that the original budget for the girls’ college project was approximately Rs95 million. Of this, Rs88.4 million has been allocated and spent, yet only about 60% of the work has been completed. The current value of the completed work is estimated at Rs57.5 million, leaving over Rs30.9 million worth of work unfinished despite the expenditure.

Furthermore, the meeting revealed that the college’s library and auditorium project was initially estimated to cost more than Rs110 million. So far, Rs69.8 million has been utilized, with the contractor receiving an advance security payment of Rs39.6 million.

Secretary Nadeem ur Rehman Memon emphasized that the government would not tolerate any misuse of funds or delays in development activities. He directed the department to enforce strict accountability measures and ensure complete transparency in all current and upcoming projects.
