PM Shehbaz calls for Gulf Calm, Affirms Pakistan’s mediator role

ISLAMABAD: : Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed serious concern over recent tensions in the Gulf region and called on Iran and the United States to exercise restraint. During a meeting with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, he emphasized Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to fostering regional peace and stability.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s stance as a neutral and sincere mediator, Shehbaz assured that the country would continue to facilitate dialogue and cooperation among neighboring nations. Momeni, visiting Pakistan officially, met with the Prime Minister at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Adviser to the Prime Minister Syed Tauqir Shah, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, and other senior officials, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

In his welcoming remarks, Shehbaz reflected on his recent trip to Tehran to pay respects at the funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei. He conveyed warm regards and good wishes to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Discussions between the two leaders covered topics of mutual interest, regional cooperation, and enhancing bilateral ties. Momeni conveyed Iran’s greetings and best wishes from its leadership, highlighting his delegation’s role in strengthening Pakistan-Iran relations.

The Iranian minister expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, particularly praising Prime Minister Shehbaz, Deputy Prime Minister Dar, and the Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, for their support in facilitating the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). He also appreciated Pakistan’s participation in the funeral of the late Ayatollah Khamenei, emphasizing the importance of continued bilateral engagement.
