KARACHI: Independence Day celebrations turned tragic in Karachi as celebratory gunfire claimed two lives and left at least 94 people injured across the city, according to rescue authorities.
The incidents occurred at various locations as people took to the streets to celebrate Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day with traditional enthusiasm and fervour.
Rescue officials said the victims included men, women and children, with the injured transported to major hospitals including Civil Hospital, Jinnah Hospital and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.
According to Chhipa rescue authorities, the casualties comprised 56 men, 15 women, 15 boys and eight girls. One of the deceased women was identified as Nida.

Despite repeated warnings from authorities, the practice of firing weapons into the air continues during major celebrations, particularly on Independence Day. The widespread availability of licensed and unlicensed firearms in Karachi further raises concerns over public safety.
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid aerial firing and other dangerous practices to ensure that national celebrations remain peaceful and do not put innocent lives at risk.
