Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has expressed the view that humans might gradually become redundant for many roles. Elon Musk has taken it a step further, forecasting that within the next twenty years, most people may not need to work at all.
The renowned AI expert, Geoffrey Hinton, widely regarded as the “Godfather of AI,” has sounded alarms about the possible negative consequences of AI on employment. Hinton, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024 for his pioneering work in AI, warns that widespread unemployment could become a reality, displacing millions of workers.
Hinton pointed out that corporations are investing heavily in AI infrastructure, including data centers and specialized chips, to boost automation. He explained that businesses are motivated by profit to develop and sell AI systems capable of performing tasks traditionally done by humans, often at a lower cost. This trend could result in significant job displacement across various industries.
Although Hinton acknowledges that AI will also generate new employment opportunities, he argues that these new roles are unlikely to match the sheer number of jobs lost. He cautions that predicting the long-term impact of AI is extremely challenging. In fact, Hinton has previously warned of a 10-20% chance that AI could eventually threaten human existence, emphasizing the critical importance of managing AI’s risks.
Hinton emphasized that the future trajectory of AI remains uncertain, with many unknowns about its development over the coming decade. His contributions helped establish the foundations of machine learning, the core technology behind AI that enables machines to simulate human cognition. Recently, however, Hinton has been advocating for responsible AI development, warning that highly advanced AI systems could become uncontrollable or impossible to deactivate.
In 2023, Hinton departed from Google, citing fears that malicious actors could exploit AI technology for harmful purposes. During an interview, he stated that many experts believe AI systems will surpass human intelligence within the next 20 years. Hinton likened AI’s potential societal impact to the Industrial Revolution, noting that just as that period initially limited human physical strength through machinery, AI could similarly replace human intellectual effort.
