ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has rejected a widely circulated social media warning about calls from 051-7080501, describing the message as fake and misleading.
A viral post falsely attributed to the telecom regulator claims that answering a call from the number could allow scammers to access mobile accounts and steal personal information within seconds.
The message further alleges that software linked to the number can extract data from a mobile phone during a call lasting just five to seven seconds. It also urges recipients to circulate the warning among family members and friends.
The PTA, however, has categorically denied issuing any such alert.
PTA urges users to verify information
In its clarification, the authority said a fabricated notification concerning the phone number had been circulating on social media for several days.
The regulator stressed that the message had no connection with the PTA and advised citizens against believing or forwarding unverified claims online.
The authority urged users to obtain telecom-related warnings and updates only through its official social media platforms and other verified communication channels.
The clarification comes as concerns over cyber fraud, online scams and the rapid spread of misleading information continue to grow, with authorities repeatedly urging the public to verify suspicious claims before sharing them.
