ISLAMABAD: The inquiry committee tasked with investigating the deadly fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has finalised its findings and is expected to present its report to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday.
Sources said the committee, constituted on the prime minister’s instructions, has completed its investigation into the incident and will brief him on the circumstances surrounding the fire and the findings of its probe.
The committee is headed by former Interior Secretary Shahid Khan and is likely to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif shortly to formally submit the report.
Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal is also scheduled to meet the prime minister separately, according to sources.
The inquiry was ordered after a fire at PIMS claimed the lives of 14 children, prompting questions over hospital safety arrangements and the response to the emergency.
Meanwhile, nurse Razia Noreen has received widespread appreciation for her bravery during the incident after risking her life to rescue a newborn from the fire-hit nursery.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Noreen recalled entering the smoke-filled room to save the trapped babies. She said she managed to bring one newborn to safety within just eight seconds.
Noreen said she was focused solely on rescuing the children and did not think about her own safety at the time.
“I did not think about becoming a hero; I simply performed my duty as a nurse and as a mother,” she said, according to the newspaper.
Her courageous action has earned praise from people across the country, with many highlighting her commitment to her professional duty during the emergency.
