ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet has sanctioned a relief package worth 75 billion rupees under the Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Scheme. The decision was made during the ECC’s meeting in Islamabad, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.
The initiative aims to provide targeted assistance to low-income groups affected by rising fuel prices. Under the scheme, owners of two- and three-wheelers will receive a weekly relief of 500 rupees, covering approximately 5 liters of petrol at 100 rupees per liter. Additionally, car owners with engine capacities up to 800cc will get a 1,000 rupee relief for ten days, based on an estimated monthly consumption of 30 liters at the same rate.
The relief is restricted to non-commercial vehicles, with a limit of one vehicle per individual or owner. To ensure transparent and efficient distribution, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom will implement and oversee the Fuel Pass System, a digital platform designed to streamline the process and enhance accountability.
In other decisions, the ECC approved the export of 200,000 metric tonnes of surplus sugar, with safeguards to stabilize domestic prices. The committee also discussed a proposal to allocate three billion rupees for purchasing 15 bulletproof sedans to ensure secure transportation during the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan in Islamabad next September. These security measures are deemed critical for the safety of visiting Heads of State.
The committee emphasized the importance of meticulous planning and timely arrangements for the SCO Summit, drawing from the successful security protocols observed during the recent SCO gathering in Kyrgyzstan.
Additionally, the ECC approved the export of additional surplus sugar and deferred deliberations on the commercial import of used vehicles. It also authorized the procurement of 15 bulletproof vehicles and approved a Rs3 billion supplementary grant for the 2027 SCO Heads of Government Summit.
