Balochistan lawmaker throws passport in Assembly after alleged airport stop

QUETTA: Balochistan opposition MPA Zahid Reki protested in the provincial assembly after saying he was stopped at an airport while travelling to Madinah and treated as a suspected terrorist.

Speaking during a point of order, Reki said the Federal Investigation Agency had prevented him from travelling. He later learned, he said, that Additional Home Secretary Hamza Shafqat had blocked his passport. Reki called for Shafqat to appear before the assembly and provide evidence of any alleged links to a banned organisation.

“When we go to Washuk, terrorists are after us, and when we come to Quetta, we are declared terrorists,” he said, arguing that his parliamentary privilege had been breached. He then threw his passport onto the assembly floor.

Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti criticised the gesture but apologised to Reki over the airport incident. He said the additional home secretary had been summoned and the matter would be discussed. Reki later apologised for throwing the passport, saying he had no improper intention.
