Karachi: Jamat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Amir Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman has announced to approach the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) over postponing of local bodies elections in Karachi for third time by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The JI Ameer further announced that his party will stage protests all across the city on October 20 on Thursday.
Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman accused the ECP of supporting the Pakistan People’s Party-led (PPP) Sindh government.
He termed the postponement of LG elections ‘unfortunate act’. While he questioned the Sindh government what fear it has which claims to be democratic pary.
The JI ameer said that cancelling of the LG elections is anti-democratic adding that the party would launch a big movement for the betterment of Karachi.
“The people of Karachi are deprived of their basic rights,” he said, adding that JI has become the only solution for the city and the citizens because the candidates and leaders of the party have no criminal records against them.
He also accused ECP of working as a tool of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), saying that if the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) should resign if he cannot hold elections.
ECP Postponed LGEs In Karachi Again
Earlier today, ECP postponed the second phase of local bodies elections in seven districts of Karachi for third time.
The ECP has cancelled the local bodies elections after a letter sent by the federal government
The decision was taken in a high level meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja.
The huddle under the CEC reviewed the letter sent by the federal government.
Sindh government had demanded the ECP deployment of 16000 security personnel for ensuring security in the local bodies elections in seven districts of Karachi under the second phase of local bodies elections.
As per the ECP, the local bodies elections were postponed owing to unavailability of security personnel.
The election body has also convened its meeting after 15 days.
Local Bodies Elections In Karachi Postponed For Third Time
The second phase of the polls was scheduled to be held in the province’s Karachi and Hyderabad divisions on July 24.
However, heavy downpours and subsequent urban flooding in various parts of the districts forced the ECP to postpone the polls.
The ECP had rescheduled the polls in Karachi and Hyderabad for August 28. However, later it decided to delay the elections in nine districts of the province once against till October 23.
Today, the ECP once again has postponed the local bodies elections in the metropolise.
The first phase of local government elections was held in 14 districts of Sindh in June 26.
