Polling ends in by-elections, counting of votes underway

Lahore/Peshawar/Quetta: Polling time is over in the by-elections on five NA and 17 provincial assembly seats across the country while counting of votes are underway.

Voting for the by-elections on five National Assembly (NA) and 17 provincial assemblies seats of Punjab, Sindh ,Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan, kicked off at 8 am and continued without interruption till 5 pm

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) , by-elections were held for five vacant seats of the National Assembly; 12 of the Punjab Assembly, two each of the Khyber-Pakh­tunkhwa and Balochistan legislatures as well as one of the Sindh Assembly.

Over 6.23 million ballot papers had been printed for the elections.

Specifically, white ballot papers have been printed for both the national and provincial assemblies.

In Punjab, 174 candidates are vying for positions, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had 49 candidates in the running.

Punjab boasts 21.77 million male and 18.67 million female registered voters, who exercised their democratic rights.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa saw 1.471 million voters participate in the by-elections.

For the National Assembly constituency NA-196 in Sindh, 4.239 million voters are eligible to vote. Five candidates will compete in this constituency, which will have 933 polling stations.

In Balochistan, 125 polling stations have been established across two provincial constituencies, where 163,000 voters will cast their votes.

To address any concerns or complaints, a control room had set up in the provincial election commissioners’ offices.

Political activist killed in Narowal

A political activist of a party died after he was hit by sticks by the opponent party workers in Narowal during a by-elections on Punjab Assembly seat PP-54.

The clash broke out in Zafarwal village Kot Naju in Narowal between two political parties on the polling day in PP-54.

According to the police, the scuffle started between two political parties during which activists of a party hit sticks on the activists of the other political party.

The 60-year-old activist Muhammad Yousuf was being shifted to a hospital, however, he succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital.

The police have started an investigation after taking the body in its custody.

PTI leader Arrested

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) local leader Shabbir Gujar has been arrested by the police.

The police shifted the PTI leader to Haloki police station. The PTI leader was arrested from a polling station in Velentia town.

People show no interest in by-elections as thin turn out recorded in PP-149 Lahore

Lahore: People didn’t show any interest in the by election in PP-149 Lahore as a very thin turn out recorded.

On this seat the Pakistan Istahkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) Shoaib Siddique and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) Hafiz Zeshan are contesting the elections against each other.

It is pertinent to mention here that Asifa Bhutto has been elected unopposed from National Assembly Constituency NA-207 Shaheed Benazirabad, while Zubair Junejo has been elected unopposed from Sindh Assembly Constituency PS 80 Dadu.
