A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 strikes Indonesia.

Web Desk: A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 in magnitude struck Indonesia’s Papua province on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at a depth of 70 kilometers (43.5 miles), as reported by USGS.

The epicenter was located approximately 200 kilometers from the city of Abepura, home to over 62,000 residents. Indonesia’s Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) recorded the earthquake slightly lower in magnitude at 6.6 SR, striking 61 kilometers northwest of Sarmi, Papua.

This follows earlier seismic activity on October 10, when two powerful offshore earthquakes hit near the southern Philippines’ coast, prompting tsunami warnings for both the Philippines and Indonesia.

Those earlier quakes resulted in at least seven fatalities and caused significant damage to infrastructure in areas close to the epicenter. Authorities also cautioned communities to prepare for the possibility of strong aftershocks.
