ISLAMABAD: A significant development has surfaced following the reported suicide of police officer SP Adeel Akbar.
Renowned psychiatrist Dr. Hafiz Sultan Muhammad disclosed that just a day before the incident, he had advised SP Adeel’s family to ensure he avoided access to firearms and sharp objects.
SP Adeel Akbar was found dead inside his car near the Serena Hotel on Thursday afternoon in what appears to be a suicide. His funeral prayers were held at the Police Lines, after which his body was transported with official honors to his hometown of Gujranwala, where he was laid to rest.
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry expressed regret over the incident and confirmed that a three-member probe committee, comprising Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs), has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
In his remarks,Talal described SP Adeel Akbar as a dedicated officer, noting that he had been recruited into the Islamabad Police by Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi after serving in Balochistan.
The Islamabad Police, through a statement on their official Facebook page, referred to SP Adeel Akbar as a capable and esteemed member of the Police Service of Pakistan. He had recently been appointed Superintendent of Police in the Industrial Area.
Adeel Akbar held an M.Phil in Governance and Public Policy from the National Defence University, Islamabad, and had recently been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for advanced studies in the United States.
Dr. Hafiz Sultan, who currently serves as a psychiatrist at PIMS Hospital, shared further insights in a detailed social media post. According to him, SP Adeel Akbar had visited him just the previous evening and displayed signs of acute mental stress.
The doctor stated that he strongly recommended immediate admission to the private ward at PIMS for treatment. However, Adeel Akbar declined, claiming he would manage his depression on his own.
