WEB DESK: An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan early Wednesday morning at approximately 4:43 AM, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
As per the agency, the earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, registering a magnitude of 5.9 according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The earthquake occurred at 4:43:58 IST and was recorded at a depth of 75 kilometers. The epicenter was located at a latitude of 35.83 N and longitude of 70.60 E, approximately 164 kilometers east of Baghlan, a populous city with around 108,000 residents.
In contrast, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 5.6, noting a greater depth of 121 kilometers. This seismic event is part of a recent series of tremors that have affected various regions in Asia.
The Hindu Kush mountains are notorious for their seismic activity due to their position at the collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making the region particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. The Herat province of Afghanistan is also situated on a major fault line, further increasing the risk of seismic events.
This earthquake follows a devastating series of quakes in October 2023, which tragically resulted in over 1,000 fatalities and displaced thousands more, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by seismic activity in Afghanistan.
