ISLAMABAD: Senator Aitzaz Ahsan on Monday grilled Director General National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for the failure of the authority to check corruption.
Senate’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice met here with Senator Javed Abbasi in the chair. During the meeting, members of the committed demanded thorough review of NAB Ordinance especially the plea bargain and voluntary return provisions.
Law Minister Zahid Hamid assured the members that a parliamentary committee would be constituted to thoroughly review accountability laws.
DG NAB Zahir Shah while briefing the committee said that the list of those who benefited the plea bargain provisions of law had been submitted in the Supreme Court.
This angered Senator Aitzaz Ahsan, who said that the law was misused to benefit corrupt and wrongdoers.
He questioned the DG NAB whether the Bureau ever held any investigation against ‘Benami account holders. The DG replied in affirmative to which Aitzaz asked another question saying that whether son or daughter could be Benami holders.
The DG replied that children could also be ‘benami’ holders. To this Aitzaz question the anti-graft watchdog’s DG whether he ever investigated Hussain Nawaz. Upon this, Law Minister Zahid Hamid intervened and said that the matters must not be detracted.
