GILGIT: Amjad Hussain of the Pakistan Peoples Party took oath as the new Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday after his party secured victory in the 2026 regional elections.
The oath was administered by Syed Mehdi Shah during a ceremony held in Gilgit.
Speaking after the ceremony, Hussain said the PPP had emerged as the largest political party in the June 7 elections, crediting the active participation of young voters and women for the party’s success.
He thanked the people for giving the PPP a decisive mandate, saying the trust shown by voters reflected a relationship that had continued across generations.
The newly sworn-in chief minister noted that the party achieved a historic breakthrough in the Diamer region, where it secured a strong mandate for the first time. He also said the public had backed the PPP despite it not being in power at the federal level.
Hussain expressed gratitude to the party leadership for its confidence in him and also thanked the Pakistan Muslim League (N) leadership for supporting the PPP’s formation of the regional government.
Elected from the GBA-1 constituency, Hussain became the fifth chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan after being elected unopposed, as no other candidate submitted nomination papers for the office. He also serves as president of the PPP’s Gilgit-Baltistan chapter.
