Operation to evict illegal occupants from SWWF flats in Maymar underway

KARACHI: The anti-encroachment force resumed its operation to evict illegal occupants from the flats of Sindh Woker Welfare Fund ’s (SWWF) building in Gulshan-e-Maymar area.

The anti-encroachment squad with equipment in three truck has reached the spot. Police is also accompanying the squad.

Earlier, the squad with the help of police had evicted illegal occupants from 800 of the 1080 flats at the building amid resistance and protest by the people living there, who claimed to be from the families of rural Sindh displaced by the 2010 floods.

The Sindh Workers Welfare Fund’s building, also known as Labour Square, was built by the labour ministry for industrial workers.

Recently, labour adviser Senator Saeed Ghani had told the chief minister that around 1,000 apartments were constructed in Gulshan-e-Maymar for industrial workers.

The apartments were allotted to workers through balloting but they had been unable to move in as people from the police department, other government departments and private organisations had illegally occupied them.
