Army allowed to use weapons, make arrests against protesters

ISLAMABAD: Anti-Terrorism Act powers also given to army, and authority to be federal government has granted special powers to Pakistan Army troops deployed in Islamabad, authorizing them to take extreme measures to maintain law and order amid escalating protests. 

A formal notification issued confirms that the Pakistan Army now has the authority to use extreme measures and force, including weapons, if the situation becomes tense. In such a situation, the army would have the powers for any kind of action.

According to the notification, in case of firing, the soldiers will have the option of carrying out immediate retaliatory action. Additionally, the army has been empowered to carry out arrests and take action against those deemed to be miscreants.

The powers under the Anti-Terrorism Act have also been delegated to the army to maintain law and order, including the authority to use baton-charge and tear gas shelling against protesters, according to the notification platon-charge, use tear gas shelling
