WEB DESK: Ambassador Asim Iftikhar has assumed the position of Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He presented his credentials to the UN Secretary-General.
The Permanent Representative emphasized the need for the international community to protect those who put their lives at risk for the service of others. He highlighted that aid workers in conflict zones face threats and gunfire.
Ambassador Iftikhar pointed out the severe crisis in Gaza, stating that 399 aid workers have been martyred since October 2023. He has submitted recommendations to the Security Council for the protection of civilians.
He proposed the establishment of a dashboard under the UN’s supervision for the protection of civilians. Ambassador Iftikhar insisted that all parties must adhere to humanitarian laws and called for the incorporation of security measures in UN missions.
He urged that violators be held accountable through investigations and that sanctions and legal actions be pursued via the Security Council. The Permanent Representative also stressed the importance of taking measures against false news and misinformation.
