Lahore (February 13, 2018):The veteran human rights activist Asma Jehangir has laid to rest in Lahore on Tuesday.

Earlier, the funeral prayers of the veteran lawyer and social activist was performed inside the Qaddafi Stadium Lahore on Tuesday afternoon.

Earlier, the body of former Supreme Court Bar Association President and human rights activist Asma Jahangir was shifted to her residence on Tuesday morning.

Former Supreme Court Bar Association President Asma Jahangir passed away on Sunday at the age of 66 years. According to reports, the veteran lawyer and human rights activist suffered a cardiac attack and could not survive.

She was a Pakistani human rights lawyer and social activist, who co-founded and chaired the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. She is widely known for playing a prominent role in the Lawyers’ Movement

Born and raised in Lahore, Jahangir studied at the Convent of Jesus and Mary before receiving her B.A from Kinnaird and LLB from the Punjab University in 1978.In 1980, Jahangir was called to the Lahore High Court and to the Supreme Court in 1982. In the 1980s, Jahangir became an democracy activist and was imprisoned in 1983 for participating in the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy against the military regime of Zia-ul-Haq.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar, former President Asif Ali Zardari, President Mamnoon Hussain paid tribute to Asma Jahangir and expressed grief.

PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz tweeted Shocked & deeply saddened to hear of Asma Jehangir’s sudden death. It is an irreparable loss. May she rest in eternal peace. Ameen.

 PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto said that the entire PPP is mourning over the death of such a brave and courageous women  and spend his entire life for rule of law and supremacy of the constitution.

PPP Leader Bakhtawar Bhutto tweeted Shocked to hear @Asma_Jahangir passed away. Huge loss for us, for Pakistan. She was courageous, fearless, invincible. In absolute disbelief. Please pray for her & her family.

Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah wrote to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi seeking a state funeral for prominent lawyer and human rights icon Asma Jahangir.

In his letter to the premier, the chief minister has also requested for the national flag to be flown at half-mast on the day of her funeral.Jahangir, who co-founded the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and came to be known as a fearless voice of the marginalised sections of the society, suffered a cardiac arrest, her family said. She was 66.

Following the tragic news, lawyers’ representative bodies are observing a day of mourning today in remembrance of the services rendered by Jahangir, who also served as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Lawyers throughout Punjab and Balochistan did not appear in courts on Monday. The Lahore High Court Bar also observed mourning.

The Sindh government also announced province-wide mourning on Monday in her memory.

Condolences poured in from all over the country as well as abroad following Jahangir’s demise, as people paid tribute to her services for democracy and efforts in the movement to restore the judiciary.
