ATC extends custody of tribal leader, transfers to serious crimes wing for additional 10 days.

QUETTA: An Anti-Terrorism Court in Quetta has granted 10 days extension of physical remand for tribal elder Sardar Sherbaz in connection with the murder of a couple accused of being victims of ‘honour killing’ the Court also transferred Sherbet to the Serious Crime Investigation Wings (SCIW) for further questioning.

The incident involved the shooting deaths of a woman, Bano Bibi, and a man, Ehsan Ullah, both allegedly ordered by a local tribal jirga in Dagari, on the city’s outskirts. The killings drew widespread attention after a social media video surfaced last week, showing the tragic execution and sparking outrage across Pakistan.

Sherbaz was presented before the court after his initial two-day remand concluded. The police requested additional time for further investigation, which the court approved, leading to his transfer to the SCIW.

Post-mortem reports revealed that Bano Bibi was shot seven times, while Ehsan Ullah was shot nine times. The autopsies were conducted at the local coal mine graveyard in Dagari. A formal case has been registered with Quetta’s Hanna-Urak Police Station under various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including murder, unlawful assembly, rioting, and terrorism-related charges.

Balochistan’s Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti confirmed that 11 suspects had been detained thus far, with operations ongoing to apprehend others. He emphasized that no one involved would be spared, noting that the victims were not married and had multiple children each. He assured that the government is committed to delivering justice through legal channels and stated that action was initiated even before the viral video emerged, with a police officer suspended for misconduct.

Additionally, the Balochistan Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the honor killing, describing it as a horrific misuse of the concept of “honor” to justify the murder of innocent individuals, especially women. The resolution, presented by Deputy Speaker Ghazala Gola on behalf of women legislators, reiterated that such acts are inhumane and violate cultural, religious, and ethical principles, calling for stringent action and societal awareness.
