ATC orders to unfreeze Shaukat Khanum and Namal University bank accounts

RAWALPINDI: Anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Monday directed the unfreezing of bank accounts belonging to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust (SKMT) and Namal University, during a hearing involving a case concerning Aleema Khan, sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.

ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah issued the decision after the prosecution stated it had no objections to restoring access to the accounts of the two institutions.

During the proceedings related to the November 26 PTI protest, Prosecutor Zaheer Shah informed the court that Aleema Khan’s CNIC number had been forwarded to the State Bank with a request to freeze her personal accounts. However, the bank also froze all accounts associated with the same CNIC, which included those of SKMT and Namal University.

After reviewing arguments from both parties, the court finalized its order to unfreeze four accounts belonging to SKMT along with those of Namal University.

The decision follows recent reassurances from SKMT regarding its operational status amidst reports of account closures and disruptions. The Trust assured the public that the majority of its accounts remained active and that patient care and treatment services had not been affected.

In a statement shared on X, SKMT acknowledged that a limited number of accounts faced temporary restrictions. Nevertheless, it expressed gratitude for the public’s continued support and trust in its mission to provide free cancer treatment to over 75% of its patients across the country.
