WEB DESK: James Cameron’s sci-fi epic “Avatar: Fire and Ash” has officially crossed the $1 billion mark in global box office revenue, marking the director’s fourth film to achieve this milestone.
The movie, which once again immerses audiences in the breathtaking world of Pandora, has accumulated $1.03 billion in ticket sales worldwide, according to Walt Disney Studios’ Sunday announcement.
“Fire and Ash” is the third chapter in the “Avatar” saga, which collectively boasts an impressive $6.35 billion in global earnings. The film continues the story from its predecessor, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” depicting Jake (portrayed by Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (played by Zoe Saldana) grieving the loss of their son.
Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s head of marketplace trends, highlighted how the visually dazzling 3D masterpiece succeeds in drawing audiences to cinemas, emphasizing it is crafted perfectly for the theater experience.
The original “Avatar,” released in 2009, remains a landmark in film history, raking in $2.9 billion globally and cementing itself as the highest-grossing movie of all time when measured in unadjusted dollars. However, when accounting for inflation and historical ticket pricing, it trails behind the 1939 classic “Gone With the Wind.”
Over a decade later, in 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” debuted and went on to earn over $2.3 billion globally while also winning an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
The latest installment, timed for release during the holiday season, pulled in $306 million domestically across the U.S. and Canada while amassing $777.1 million internationally, according to Disney.
Cameron’s record of blockbuster success began with 1997’s “Titanic,” his first film to cross the billion-dollar threshold. To date, “Titanic” has earned close to $2.3 billion worldwide.
