Islamabad(April 12, 2018): The counsel of Maryam Nawaz, Amjad Pervez, on Thursday continued the cross examination of the start witness in the Avenfield reference case, Wajid Zia for the 11th consecutive day.     

Zia, an additional director at the Federal Investigation Agency, headed the Panama case joint investigation team (JIT) which probed the Sharif family’s assets last year.

Zia is being cross examined in the case for the last 11 days of which the first 10 days were consumed when the counsel of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif thoroughly cross examined him.

The proceedings into the case on Thursday began with Accountability Court-I Judge Muhammad Bashir, who has been conducting corruption proceedings against the Sharif family since September last year, in the chair.

The former Premier, Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (R) Safdar appeared before the court during the proceedings.

The proceedings today witnessed a heated argument between the NAB prosecutor and the Maryam Nawaz counsel, Amjad Pervez during the cross-examination process.

In yesterday’s hearing, the cross examination on Wajid Zia, the star witness in Avenfield Reference filed against Sharif family, completed on the 10th day after the Sharif’s counsel concluded the process

Talking to the mediamen on Wednesday, Nawaz Sharif said that the JIT concealed all facts that were in their favour and Wajid Zia told the court that he has no evidence to prove Nawaz Sharif’s salary, reference was filed against him to take revenge, he added.“My case was not a terrorism case then why there was a need to include a SSP rank officer, ISI and MI officials in the JIT,” he asked and added that the nation would made Wajid Zia, the star witness in the Avenfield reference and former Panama JIT Head, accountable for his sins.

Background Of The Cases:

The trial against the Sharif family started on September 14, 2017.

The corruption references, filed by NAB against the Sharifs, include the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment, offshore companies including Flagship Investment Ltd, and Avenfield properties of London.Nawaz and sons Hussain and Hasan are accused in all three references whereas his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Safdar are accused in the Avenfield reference only.

The two brothers, based abroad, have been absconding since the proceedings began last year and were declared proclaimed offenders by the court.
