Awais Leghari declares end to power load-shedding

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Power Awais Leghari has officially announced that the power load-shedding across the country has concluded.

In a video message, he shared that the nation received liquefied natural gas (LNG) yesterday, and that electricity generation from hydropower has now reached 6,000 megawatts. He highlighted that the recent power outages, which began approximately two weeks ago, were caused by a gas shortage rather than any system failure or lack of capacity.

Leghari explained that initially, it was clarified during a press briefing that the load-shedding was not due to negligence or operational issues but was primarily due to the unavailability of LNG supplies, which was affected by the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

He further noted that had the government relied solely on diesel or furnace oil to generate electricity, the cost to consumers would have been significantly higher, making power more expensive for the public.

Additionally, the minister corrected a common misconception by stating that the country’s actual power generation capacity is around 32,000 megawatts, not 46,000 megawatts as sometimes claimed.

Leghari assured the public that every effort would be made to prevent any increase in electricity prices and to protect consumers from additional financial burdens.
