TEHRAN: Iran announced on Tuesday the appointment of Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), as the new head of the Supreme National Security Council, succeeding the late Ali Larijani. The announcement was made by state television.
Larijani, a prominent and influential figure within Iran’s political landscape, was confirmed dead after Israel claimed responsibility for a strike that killed him last week. His death marks a significant shift in Iran’s leadership at a critical moment when regional tensions remain high and the country faces ongoing military and diplomatic pressures.
The death of Larijani has prompted a major reshuffle among Iran’s senior officials, as authorities work to reorganize their security and strategic planning in the midst of ongoing conflicts. Zolghadr, a seasoned IRGC veteran, now assumes a role that places him at the heart of Iran’s decision-making on defense, nuclear policy, and foreign affairs.
The Supreme National Security Council is a vital component of Iran’s power structure, coordinating responses across military, intelligence, and diplomatic channels, particularly during times of crisis. As the new secretary, Zolghadr will be responsible for leading strategic discussions and influencing key security policies, a position that carries significant influence over Iran’s regional and international responses.
His appointment underscores an increasing role for the IRGC within Iran’s leadership hierarchy, reflecting the military’s expanding influence over the country’s political and defense strategies. The move suggests a possible shift towards a more prominent role for the Revolutionary Guards in shaping Iran’s future security and diplomatic course.
