Balochistan to introduce Quetta–Kuchlak people’s train service to enhance affordable transit

QUETTA: Pakistan Railways, in partnership with the Balochistan government, has unveiled plans to inaugurate the Quetta–Kuchlak People’s Train Service, aiming to improve transportation options within the province.

Federal Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi highlighted that this initiative exemplifies strong collaboration between Pakistan Railways and Balochistan’s provincial administration, marking a significant step toward providing affordable, safe, and reliable travel for local residents.

Abbasi shared these remarks during a meeting with Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Quetta. The discussions centered on finalizing joint development projects, including the launch and expansion of the People’s Train Service, designed to serve the public with low-cost transit options.

He emphasized that, for the first time in Pakistan Railways’ 78-year history, a decision has been made to devolve railway operations to the provincial level, with Balochistan taking the lead in this historic move. This shift signifies enhanced trust and stronger coordination between federal and provincial authorities.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Bugti announced that Rs1.4 billion would be allocated within the week to support the People’s Train Service. The initial route from Sariab to Kuchlak will be followed by future extensions to Mastung and Pishin in subsequent phases.

Bugti reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to investing in railway infrastructure, including station development and upgrades, underscoring the revival of Balochistan’s railway system as a top priority to facilitate affordable and accessible travel for residents.

Abbasi noted that while all three provinces have expressed interest in establishing local railway services, Balochistan has distinguished itself through proactive measures and tangible progress, underscoring its leadership in railway development initiatives.
