DHAKA: The Bangladesh Supreme Court has nullified the death sentence of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh leader Azharul Islam and ordered his release.
According to foreign news agencies, the court acquitted Azharul Islam, who was sentenced to death, of crimes against humanity.
Azharul Islam has been in prison since 2012 and was sentenced to death during the tenure of the Haseena Wajed government last year.
According to the report, Azharul Islam is one of six politicians who were sentenced to death during Haseena Wajed’s government; among these individuals, four are from Jamaat-e-Islami and one is a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. According to Azharul Islam’s lawyer, he is fortunate that he was not sentenced to death until now, and he considers this justice because he is still alive.
