DHAKA: Osman Hadi, a prominent young political leader in Bangladesh, has died from injuries after a violent assault. He was a leading figure in the student movement that toppled the Sheikh Hasina government in July and served as the spokesperson for the political platform “Inquilab Manch,” founded by student activists.
Last Friday, unidentified gunmen attacked him in Dhaka, leaving him critically injured. He was swiftly transported to a hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. Despite these efforts, Osman Hadi was transferred to Singapore for specialized treatment on Saturday and passed away today while receiving medical care.
He was known to be preparing to run as an independent candidate in Bangladesh’s upcoming general elections.Yesterday, Singapore’s Foreign Minister paid a visit to Osman Hadi at the hospital and briefed Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus by phone that Hadi’s health was extremely fragile.
Authorities in Bangladesh have launched an investigation into the assault, and to date, 14 suspects have been detained in connection with the case.
In response to the attack, protesters gathered in Dhaka yesterday, including a demonstration outside the Indian High Commission, condemning the violence against the student leader.
