LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday ruled that the Punjab government’s scheme to provide motorcycles to students requires an environmental No Objection Certificate (NOC).
Justice Shahid Karim presided over the hearing, addressing petitions from citizens, including Haroon Farooq, concerning smog remediation.
The court stated that proceeding with the motorcycle distribution project without obtaining an environmental NOC constitutes a criminal offense. Stating the severity of pollution, Justice Karim highlighted the necessity of environmental oversight.
Additionally, the court mandated the complete restoration and safety of all city parks, recommending the imposition of fines to ensure compliance. The LHC also requested a report on the restoration of seven sports complexes managed by the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and the issue of tree cutting.
The Punjab government was ordered to submit a detailed report on the motorcycle supply scheme by May 27.
