KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari led the launch of a new women-focused transport initiative in Karachi on Thursday, distributing free pink electric scooters to working women in the city.
The distribution ceremony, organized by the Sindh government, marks a major step toward empowering women with safer and more accessible mobility options.
The event was attended by key provincial figures, including Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, and other senior officials.
Speaking at the event, Bilawal highlighted the PPP-led government’s commitment to supporting women in the workforce. “We are dedicated to creating a more inclusive environment by providing modern, eco-friendly transport solutions for working women,” he said.
He also noted that Sindh was the first province in Pakistan to introduce electric buses, adding that this initiative builds on that progress.
To ensure fairness, the Sindh government has outlined a clear and transparent mechanism for scooter allocation:
Scooters will be distributed through a public balloting process, conducted in front of both print and electronic media.
A selection committee will be formed, including representatives from the Excise, Transport, and Finance Departments, along with members of the media, to oversee the process and maintain transparency.
