ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Thursday called for Parliament to be taken into confidence over the threats and challenges confronting the country, urging the foreign affairs, defence and interior ministers to brief lawmakers on the situation.
Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly, Bilawal stressed that legislators had the right to know the nature of the threats facing Pakistan and the government’s strategy to address them.
He called for a detailed briefing on developments in the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea and other regions of strategic importance.
Bilawal also questioned Pakistan’s role in agreements related to the Iran dispute, asking about the objectives and implications of defence agreements that the PPP supported.
He maintained that Parliament must be kept informed of all major national and international issues, warning that certain elements wanted to weaken the legislature and undermine its effectiveness.
“The people who wanted a weak Parliament have achieved their objective,” he remarked, adding that those contributing to this situation had helped fulfil that agenda.
The PPP chairman also emphasised the importance of the opposition’s role in parliamentary proceedings. He urged the opposition leader to exercise the authority entrusted to the office by the party’s founder and direct opposition representatives to participate in parliamentary committee meetings.
Bilawal said active participation by lawmakers was essential to ensuring Parliament fulfilled its constitutional responsibilities and remained an effective forum for discussing matters of national importance.
