United Nations: Head of high-level parliamentary delegation Chairman Pakistan People’s Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has urged the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to play an active role in reducing tensions between Pakistan and India, promoting dialogue and restoring the Indus Waters Treaty.
During a meeting with the UN Secretary General António Guterres, at UN Headquarters in New York, he particularly emphasized the need for comprehensive negotiations on Jammu and Kashmir issue, which is key to establishing lasting peace in South Asia.
The delegation also briefed on the humanitarian implications of holding in abeyance of the Indus Water Treaty, India’s unprovoked aggression and violation of UN Charter and International law.
Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed Pakistan’s desire for peace and reaffirmed the United Nations’ strong interest in the preservation of peace, restraint, and diplomacy in the region.
He reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at de-escalation and peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue, in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.
During meeting with President of General Assembly Philemon Yang, along with delegation, Bilawal Bhutto conveyed Pakistan’s grave concern over India’s hasty and unfounded accusations against Pakistan, made in the absence of any credible investigation.
He apprised the President of the General Assembly of the deteriorating regional security situation following the Pahalgam incident.
The President of the General Assembly expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s continued engagement with the United Nations.
