Brain drain continues in Pakistan as half of million people left country in first half of 2023

Islamabad: More than 450,000 Pakistanis have left their country in search of improved job opportunities abroad, official data reveals over the first half of 2023

This trend reflects a growing wave of educated and skilled individuals seeking prospects beyond Pakistan’s ongoing economic challenges.

The Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment’s data highlights the diverse array of professionals departing, including 12,787 classified as ‘highly qualified,’ emphasizing the brain drain phenomenon.

Furthermore, 26,405 ‘highly skilled’ and 164,155 ‘skilled’ workers have ventured abroad.

By approximately 198,000 ‘unskilled’ workers pursuing overseas employment opportunities.

Saudi Arabia stands as the top destination for Pakistani migrant workers, with 205,515 choosing the kingdom, followed by the UAE with 121,745.

Gulf countries like Oman, Qatar, and Bahrain have also experienced significant inflows. Additionally, smaller numbers of Pakistani workers have headed to nations such as Malaysia, China, South Korea, Japan, and various European countries.
