Vote Count Underway in Second Round of By-polls

Karachi, Peshawar (October 21, 2018): The vote count for second round of by-elections on National Assembly seat NA-247, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly seat PK-71, Sindh Assembly seat PS-111 and Azad Kashmir constituencies LA 18 Poonch 2 was underway on Sunday.

The polling started at 8am and ended at 5pm. Polling material was transported to the polling stations under the supervision of Pakistan Army personnel a day earlier.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), there are 546,451 registered voters in NA-247 and 178,965 registered voters in PS-111.

Twelve candidates are in the run for the NA-247 seat while 11 are contesting for the Sindh Assembly seat.

NA-247 was vacated by President Dr Arif Alvi while PS-111 was vacated by Sindh Governor Imran Ismail.Prominent candidates in the run for NA-247 seat include PTI’s Aftab Hussain Siddiqui, Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Qaiser Nizamani, Sadiq Iftikhar of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and Pak Sarzameen Party’s (PSP) Arshad Vohra. Seven independent candidates are also contesting the by-polls for the constituency: Syed Adil Askari, Syed Mujahid Rasool, Shaikh Samir Mir, Tahir Ashraf Hashmi, Abdul Jalil Khan, Muhammad Ayaz, and Muhammad Sharif Awan. Ali Nawab of Pakistan Sunni Tehreek is also in the run.

PTI’s Shehzad Qureshi, MQM-P’s Jehanzeb Mughal, PML-N’s Mohammad Zahid Hussain and activist Muhammad Jibran Nasir are among those contesting on PS-111.

President Arif Alvi cast his vote at the Defence Authority Model High School earlier today. Speaking to media on the occasion, he requested the public to come out and vote. Responding to a question, he said everyone knew why the inflation had risen in the past 15 days.

KP’s PK-71 fell vacant after Shah Farman was appointed as Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

PTI’s Zulfiqar Khan, Awami National Party candidate Salahuddin, and independent candidates Dildar Khan, Abdul Karim Khan, and Fazale Haq Kohi Damani are contesting on the seat.

Oct 14 by-election result
In the by-election on October 14, polling was held for 11 seats each of the National and Punjab assemblies, nine of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and two each of the Sindh and Balochistan assemblies.PTI and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won four seats each. Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid-e-Azam (PML-Q) retained the two seats that were vacated by party chief Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, while the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) won the NA-35 constituency in Bannu.

PTI was unable to retain the two seats won by Prime Minister Imran Khan in the July 25 general election.
