Germany: Driver drove a car into a crowd at a Christmas market, killing one and injuring several others.
According to German media, tragedy struck in Magdeburg, a vehicle crashed into a bustling Christmas market, resulting in at least two fatalities and injuring around 68 others.
On Friday night, officials characterised the incident as a deliberate attack, confirming that the driver was apprehended at the scene. An investigation is currently underway.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his condolences in the wake of the tragic incident, taking to the social media platform X to share his thoughts.
He wrote, “We stand by their side and by the side of the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours.”
Interior minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Tamara Zieschang, has identified the suspect as a 50-year-old physician from Saudi Arabia, who came to Germany in 2006. Prior to this incident, he had not been on the radar of security authorities.
