ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar announced that the government plans to abolish the post of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) effective November 27, 2025.
Addressing the Senate session on Saturday, Tarar said the move is part of the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, which also seeks to introduce new honorary military titles Marshal of the Air Force and Marshal of the Naval Force.
The minister clarified that the authority to bestow these titles will rest with parliament, rather than the prime minister. He added that the Field Marshal title will receive constitutional protection, and only parliament will have the power to withdraw it.
Under the same amendment, Tarar explained, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) will assume the new designation of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) a constitutional post with a fixed five-year tenure. “The rank of Field Marshal is purely honorary, while the Chief of Defence Forces will hold executive command,” he elaborated.
Tarar further informed the House that General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, the current CJCSC, will retire on November 27, after which the office will be formally dissolved.
